These materials are used in the manufacturing of automotive and industrial brushes, electrical contacts, current collector shoes, and a wide range of mechanical products. In selecting a carbon material you are obtaining a product unique in many ways. It is self lubricating, chemically inert to most materials, arc-resistant, able to be custom tailored for current carrying capacity and is machinable into numerous configurations. Carbon products are the result of years of research and development. St. Marys Carbon Company, with over a half century of experience, has a large selection of grades available to meet a wide range of demanding applications.

Commercial grades of carbon graphite, electrographite, resin bonded graphite and metal graphite are prepared by mixing a variety of raw materials together to create a mix. Materials used can include: natural and artificial graphite, carbon black, coke, copper, silver and other metals. The mix is molded to shape and baked in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Baking changes the compacted mechanical bonds between the powder particles to metallurgical bonds, or in the case of non-metal materials, carbonizes the binder. This heating operation permanently sets the shape of the molded material. When the baked product is subjected to an additional baking operation, the carbon structure is graphitized to a specific polycrystalline form commonly known as electrographite. In practice, the words carbon and graphite are used interchangeably, however they are different. Each product or grade has its own distinctive properties and end uses.

This is accomplished by the use of a variety of cutting, drilling, grinding, and turning equipment. Brushes can be manufactured with the shunt molded, tamped or riveted. Terminals and hammer plates, which may be manufactured in house to your specifications, are attached by riveting, welding or soldering. Automated machining equipment is used to improve quality while controlling cost. The stock material is under strict process control from initial mixing to final machining for adherence to quality requirements.
